An I-Beam steer axle is an open mechanical system that is dependent on grease to both lubricate and to flush and block out contamination.
Sparrs Axle Machine recommends that all of the steer axles re-manufactured or rebuilt by Sparrs Axle Machine be lubricated using a good quality NLGI 2 grease designed for Automotive Wheel Bearing and Chassis Lubrication on the following schedule;
Severe use applications: Every 1500 miles or once every two weeks, whichever occurs first.
- Severe use applications include vehicles operated at temperatures below freezing, vehicles used for delivery service, police, taxi or other commercial applications.
- Vehicles operated in dusty areas or off-road frequently.
- Vehicles frequently loaded near or above the GVWR as stated by the vehicle manufacturer.
Normal use applications: Every 3000 miles or once per month, whichever occurs first.
- Normal use applications include all vehicles not included under the severe use category.
These have been our recommendations since we opened in January of 1992 and are based on our experience with steer axle components, our observation of the condition of parts submitted to us for re-manufacturing and rebuilding, and the recommendations of truck parts manufacturers including General Motors and Westport Axle.
